Introduction BMW N47 Engine Problems - Engine Timing Chain - Premature Failure Both the turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel variants of E90/F30 BMW 3 Series and E60/F10 BMW 5 series sedans from 2007 to 2015 are powered by the 1.6L/2.0L BMW N47 engine. The BMW N47 engine is known to be problematic due to its excessive timing
More engine specs Because of problems with the timing chain, which tends to stretch at 100,000 km, the BMW N47 This BMW 5 series 2.0 engine oil type is 5W-30 and oil capacity is 5.2 litres. The N47 engine is known for having an issue with the timing chain tensioner. BMW did do a recall on all pre-2011 cars and corrected the problem for cars built mid 2011 and onwards.
The LCI, 550i had around another 50hp added, which made it around 4.6 seconds to 62mph, IIRC. Also, with the weight of the V8 up front and without the M5’s suspension, it might handle worse than the smaller engined cars, so definitely have a long test drive.
I actually own a F10 520d with the 8 speed sports transmission and a tesdrove a 525d with the same transmission. After 3.500km I can assure you, you don't need the 525 for the extra power. Off course the 525 is a bit faster (but not that much). Actually, when you drive the 520d, you would say that it is a 6 cylinder.

My 328i says the same on the engine cover. F10 525d uses the N47S1 engine with sequential turbos. (Same as the F20 1-series 125d). The 520d uses the N47N engine with VGT single turbo. Neither use a Twin Scroll turbo, that is primarily used in the petrol engine domain, like the N20 engine in the 328i. HighlandPete.
With the same engine there are also two other BMW 5 series versions - with rear wheel drive and manual gearbox (BMW 525d MT), and with rear wheel drive and automatic gearbox (BMW 525d AT) available: BMW 525d MT manufacturer's fuel consumption is lower by 0.2 litres per 100 km or 4 % - 4.9 litres per 100 km, whereas users reported real fuel
